Hailey began competing on the ITU Paratriathlon circuit in 2012, and won her first World Championship just one year later.  In 2015, she won the Paralympic Test Event in Rio, becoming the first U.S. Paratriathlete to qualify for the 2016 Paralympics Games.  In addition to her successes in triathlon, Hailey holds two World Records for above-knee amputee runners - the marathon and the 400-meter.

Although she was active in sports all her life, Hailey’s athletic dreams were put on hold when, at the age of 12, she was diagnosed with bone cancer in her left leg.  A year of chemotherapy and many surgeries saved her life, but left her with a leg that was functionless.  In an effort to reclaim her life and go back to the active lifestyle she once had, she decided to have her leg amputated above the knee at 14.  She discovered her love for triathlon six years later, and has not slowed down ever since.

One of the defining moments in my life was when I realized that I didn't have to wear the nametags that my life circumstances gave me; rather, I possessed the power to choose my own nametags. It's a lesson I wish I could have learned many years earlier, which is why I am so excited to share this message with the young people of today."
